"RIM's co-CEOs have reacted angrily to Apple using the BlackBerry Bold 9700 as an example that all mobile phones have issues with signal, not just the iPhone 4."
I think we need a bit of clarification here!
The IPhone 4: When gripped in a particular way, the palm of your hand bridges the gap between the wifi antenna and the 3G antenna which causes a short circuit and thus the drop of signal.
The BlackBerry Bold 9700: The signal drops when gripped in a certain way as the built in antenna is being covered and thus cannot get a clear signal.
The IPhone 4 issue is caused by bad design whilst the Blackberry issue is due to the fundamental laws of physics. Very Different!
